CARBON REDUCTION PLAN
Commitment to Achieving Net Zero
ABW Architects Ltd. is committed to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050.
Baseline Emissions Footprint
Baseline emissions are a record of the greenhouse gases that have been produced in the past and were produced prior to the introduction of any strategies to reduce emissions. Baseline emissions are the reference point against which emissions reduction can be measured.
Baseline Year: 1st January 2025 - 31st December 2025
ABW Architects Ltd. reports Greenhouse Gases (GHG) emissions in accordance with the ISO 14064:1-2018 and GHG Emissions Protocol Accounting and Reporting Standards.
The International Organisation of Standardisation (ISO) created the ISO 14064 standard in 2006, updating in 2018 to specify the principles and requirements at the organisational level for the quantification and reporting of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and removals. It includes requirements for the design, development, management, reporting and verification of an organisation’s GHG inventory.
The “Greenhouse Gas Protocol - Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard” (GHG Protocol, 2011) developed in a partnership of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) and the World Resource Institute (WRI) follow a similar methodology mirroring those of the ISO standard.
By using the two most widely recognised and used emission standards in the world, ABW ensure all measurements, calculations and subsequent offsetting are completed to the most regulated and accurate standards possible.
During the baseline year, ABW Architects Ltd. employed 8 staff, operating from a single premises in Liverpool City Centre, working across the North West Region.
ABW Architects Ltd. undertake this reporting on a voluntary basis.
BASELINE YEAR EMISSIONS
Scope 1 - Direct Emissions
Activities owned or controlled by your organisation that release emissions straight into the atmosphere. Examples of scope 1 emissions include emissions from combustion in owned or controlled boilers, or fuel used in owned or controlled vehicles.
Scope 2 - Energy Indirect
Emissions being released into the atmosphere associated with the consumption of purchased electricity, heat, steam and cooling. These are indirect emissions that are a consequence of your organisation’s activities but which occur at sources you do not own or control. The most common type of Scope 2 emission is electricity purchased for own consumption from the National Grid or a third party.
Scope 3 - Other Indirect
Emissions are discretionary to include that are a consequence of your actions, which occur at sources which you do not own or control and which are not classified as scope 2 emissions. Examples of scope 3 emissions include business travel not owned or controlled by your organisation (e.g.. use of public transport), commuting, use of ‘grey fleet’ (i.e. use of employees’ own cars for which fuel costs are claimed back via expenses), emissions from contractors, and supply chain procurement.

EMISSIONS REDUCTION TARGETS
In order to continue our progress to achieving Net Zero, we have adopted the following carbon reduction targets:
To achieve a 50% reduction in emissions by 2030, ABW will reduce its emissions by 6.52 tCO2e from the ‘Baseline’ (first year) assessment by 2030.
This will require a reduction of 7.14% (6.43 tCO2e) per year from the ‘Baseline’ (2025) assessment of the organisation. This target is aspirational due to the low carbon footprint ABW already emits.
A further reduction of 2.5% (0.35 tCO2e) each year is then required in order to achieve Net Zero.
Should significant changes to the business size and structure occur in the future we will amend the ‘Baseline’ assessment year, as well as look at intensity values (tCO2e per million turnover, FTE or other metric), to further track and implement reduction strategies.
These targets can be seen in the graph below:

CARBON REDUCTION PROJECTS
Completed Carbon Reduction Initiatives
The following environmental management measures and projects have been initiated and implemented since the 2025 baseline assessment.
Carbon reduction initiatives implemented to date:
-
Continued certification to ISO 14001: Environmental Management Systems (EMS).
-
Flexible working policy.
-
Virtual meetings policy.
-
Green work based travel policy.
-
Continuing Professional Development (CPD) with particular attention on carbon literacy training, sustainability and carbon net-zero. All staff have attended the RIBA Net Zero Carbon CPD Course.
In the future we hope to implement further measures such as:
-
Net zero commercial vehicle policy.
-
Further roll out of carbon training to all staff.
-
Zero carbon supply chain collaboration initiative.
-
Introduction of employee benefits associated with commuting e.g. Cycle2Work, Electric Car Salary Sacrifice.
