COLLEGE EXTENSION

Rochdale Sixth Form College appointed ABW to extend its main college building in the centre of Rochdale, unlocking additional teaching accommodation to support the College’s continued growth and increasing demand for places.

Located on a highly constrained urban site, the project presented a complex set of challenges, including limited developable area, close proximity to neighbouring buildings and significant flood risk constraints. ABW developed a carefully considered extension to the northern aspect of the existing building, maximising the available footprint while protecting the operation, character and legibility of the wider campus.

The design delivers a substantial increase in high-quality teaching space, while introducing a contemporary architectural language that complements and diversifies the existing college estate. Technical challenges, including flood risk mitigation and engagement with the Environment Agency, were resolved through an integrated design approach, incorporating measures such as blue roof attenuation and grey water strategies.

The completed extension provides Rochdale Sixth Form College with flexible, future-focused learning spaces at the heart of its town centre campus, supporting the College’s ambition to grow enrolment while continuing to offer an exceptional environment for students and staff.
