NURSERY REIMAGINING

Tasked with reimagining an existing nursery within a Grade II Listed Victorian primary school, ABW transformed the space into a bright, open-plan environment with refurbished sanitary provision and dedicated early years learning areas.

From concept to completion, the project presented a number of challenges, including delivery within a live school environment and on a constrained urban site in North Liverpool. The design carefully balances the needs of young children and adult staff, with acoustics, natural light and material selection all playing an important role in creating a calm, practical and engaging setting.

Preserving and celebrating the fabric of the existing building was central to the approach. Over time, a number of interventions had concealed original features, including covered steel beams, blocked fireplaces and floor finishes hidden away. Where possible, these elements were revealed, restored and integrated into the new design.

The result is a bright, vibrant and characterful space for children aged 0–3 to develop, learn and explore through play.
