The design of buildings is often about resolving conflicting issues but also about looking for and taking advantage of opportunities that already exist.
To do this we need to have a detailed understanding
of the brief and also see the potential of a site or
Buildings need to be places that are enjoyable
and contribute to a quality of life. They need to be accessible, not just physically but also in terms of being inviting, whilst also providing privacy and quietness. Buildings should respond to a site and contribute to the environment around them, the spaces between buildings are just as important
as the buildings themselves.
Whilst all projects are different, site, function, client and budgets vary enormously, our objective ensure that we can bring integrity, ingenuity, practicality, functionality and hopefully delight to the scheme, whilst complying with budget and programme.
To do this it is imperative to talk and develop
openness and trust between everyone that is
involved with the project.

Buildings are a significant source of global carbon emissions. Modern UK standards for new buildings are incrementally reducing these however still leave room for improvement. Existing buildings, over 10 years old, constitute by far the greater percentage of our national building stock but mostly have poor or retrograde energy performance. Low energy building design and refurbishment have, in response to these challenges, become mainstream activities within the profession and wider construction industry.
The directors of ABW have an established track record in low carbon design gained over many years and are well-qualified to implement the right approach for each situation. In its most basic form this may
involve simply satisfying existing regulations in
order to progress the project. Passive measures
such as building orientation, form and using building mass to control temperature rises represent simple and effective strategies which can also be utilised.
In addition to these, where required, there also exist opportunities to implement a range of measures in order to reduce the carbon footprint of a project and deliver greater savings to running costs.
ABW have successfully used various measures in recent educational and private domestic projects: ground source heat pump technology, solar thermal energy, thermal storage systems, green roof coverings, high levels of thermal insulation, combined heat and power systems and heat recovery techniques. Each client and project are unique and require bespoke solutions. For example, in the past, the directors have developed –in conjunction with DIY Kyoto- an energy wall which displays consumption by colour for the benefit of the occupants or end-users. ABW continue to improvise where necessary and currently act as masterplanners for a University campus which was awarded the national accolade of Environmental Pioneer in 2010.
Andrew Brown is a Director of ABW architects Ltd.
And was formerly an Associate Director of The Owen Ellis Partnership for five years. Andrew has served as a Trustee for Belvedere Girls Day School Trust and is currently a Trustee of Sefton Park Palm House Preservation Trust.
He has been responsible for designing a diverse range of projects and buildings. These include university masterplanning, various further education and university schemes, social housing projects,
student residential schemes and public art projects.
Simon Almond has comprehensive experience as a director in Owen Ellis Partnership from 1988 to 2008.
Simon has been responsible for a diverse range of projects, from large university developments, through to conservation, residential, special needs housing and building extension projects. He has experience in handling housing projects and has received the RIBA Housing Design Award
Dave joined ABW in September 2010 and plays a key role in our team of architects, drawing on his extensive previous experience as a project architect.
Prior to joining ABW, Dave has amassed experience in the housing sector in particular, as well as working in other commercial sectors, overseeing work on a range of housing projects from general needs to extra care and student accommodation, both new build and redevelopment of existing historic buildings.
Andrew joined ABW in 2008 while completing his studies at University of Liverpool. Since qualifying
as an architect Andrew has worked on a variety of projects from sketch design through to completion.
Prior to joining ABW he gained experience on residential and commercial projects in Australia,
and worked on workplace and industrial developments in the UK and Russia.
Jonathan joined ABW in 2013 having worked on a variety of new build and refurbishment projects across the UK. Jonathan has experience working on luxury residential developments, large transport hubs and within the healthcare, commercial and retail sectors.
Seán joined ABW in 2016 after completing his Masters at The University of Liverpool. He assists on a variety of projects - from sketch design and throughout the construction process.
Laurie joined ABW in October 2017 after completing her BA in Architecture at the University of Liverpool, and is currently completing her year out before returning to university.
Oliver joined ABW in April 2018. His prior experience and extensive knowledge of Revit and other BIM software has been a welcome addition to the practice.
Lisa joined ABW in 2016 after having previously worked at other various architecture practices in the region. Lisa has been implementing our BIM training.
Working on a part-time basis at ABW, Lisa also specialises in letterpress printing, owning Indiepop Press and regularly attends events and print fairs throughout the North.

An existing conservatory was demolished to make way for a substantial garden room extension to archive an open plan living room, dining and kitchen area. 10 meter wide glazed doors look out into the private garden, making it part of the living space and flooding the room with light
Congratulations to Edge Hill University for winning the WhatUni Student Choice Award 2017 for Best Student Accommodation!
ABW have submitted plans for a further Phase of Student Accommodation at Edge Hill University, Ormskirk. The latest development along the St Helens Road site aims to provide a further 168 en-suite bedrooms. The design takes advantage of views out over the surrounding countryside and is set amongst mature planting, making the most of the narrow site.
The Creative Media Building at Edge Hill University has won the Commercial Category for the West Lancashire Design Awards 2015!
Creative Edge is a state-of-the-art building providing high-spec suites of industry standard facilities for Media, Film, Animation, Advertising and Computing students.
Features include TV studios with broadcast capacity and full production capabilities, recording studios, sound-editing suites, a radio studio, animation studios, photographic studio, multimedia laboratory and networking, forensic and computer labs. The new facilities provide space for teaching, research and collaboration with industry partners.

ABW have completed work on Edge Hill University’s new Sports Centre.
The centre was officially opened Autumn 2015 by Katarina Johnson Thompson and Barrie Wells.
ABW were involved from feasibility stage, in public consultation and achieved planning consent for building in the green belt. The new facility has an 8 court sports hall, dance studio, 25m swimming pool and 80 station fitness suite.
ABW have completed work on Palatine Court with Edge Hill University. This latest Phase of student accommodation creates 144 en-suite study bedrooms. Large, bright, kitchen diners and social spaces take advantage of views over the surrounding countryside.
Palatine Court opened at the end of September 2015 to welcome new first year students.
Works to re-open Grade II Listed Beecham Building at St Helens College have been completed. The restored space was re-opened for the start of the academic year.
Beechams Clock Tower and Offices in St Helens were built as the headquarters for the Beecham pharmaceutical company in the 1880s for the rapid production of medicines. The building will now house higher education and student facilities.
The refurbishment has transformed the former Beecham's reception area beneath the iconic clock tower. It has created a gallery and workshop space in collaboration with The Heart of Glass project. The work will also include the creation of a state-of-the-art IT suite and collaborative study area located in Thomas Beecham's former office.
ABW Architects are working with St Helens College to refurbish part of the existing Technology Centre Building, where students develop their skills and knowledge of the Construction Industry.
ABW’s interventions are designed to raise the profile of the College in the community and change the building from being a cellular compartmented place to a light and airy space that will transform the student experience.
Student Accommodation for Imperial College, London.
ABW have designed interiors for 600 student rooms and shared accommodation on the ground floor including, Restaurant, Bar, Coffee Shop, Common Room and Reception spaces.
Probably one of the most important buildings in St Helens, and certainly one of the most prominent, this Grade II listed building formed part of Beechams Pharmaceuticals factory. ABW have been appointed by St Helens College to undertake interior refurbishment works of the Beecham Clock Tower.
We are working with the college to bring public access back to the building, refurbishing the entrance hall with its marble cladding, mosaic floor ,mahogany joinery and forming a gallery space.
ABW are working with Staffordshire University for the £10million refurbishment of 11,000 sqm of existing buildings across their Stoke Campus,the first phase of which is currently on site.
The scheme aims to adapt a high profile building within the centre of Stoke to form the a new Faculty of Arts and Creative Technologies, bringing together art, animation, gallery spaces, TV and music relocating them from another site.
The existing area is a complex collection of buildings made up of a number of properties which range from the original 1914 Cadman building to later 1960’s building, all surrounding a central courtyard. The original 1914 building is historically important to the University and contributes to the local city street scene.The Cadman Building currently houses a number of Faculty teaching and learning spaces, Student Services spaces, catering and social spaces, the Thompson Library as well as a number of support services including Campus and Commercial Services, Information Services (IT), Marketing and Public Relations.
Our proposals will simplify the circulation and use the central courtyard as focus and hub for activities, giving a distinct sense of place and to better connect with the rest of the university campus. The scheme will improve and utilise the buildings frontage to advertise a visual course and raise the profile of the facilities. The refurbishment of the buildings will improve the student experience and transform the internal spaces, increasing the building's capacity and upgrading areas for staff and students and improve disabled access.
ABW have been appointed as Architects for the second phase of refurbishment works at the Grade II Listed, Princes Park Mansions.
Princes Park Mansions was designed by Wyatt Papworth and built in 1843 as a terrace of ten luxury houses. Set on an important site at the corner of Sefton Park Road and Croxteth Road, it formed an imposing part of the ambitious and innovative Princes Park development. By 1912, the building had been converted into apartments.
The building is owned controlled by the Princes Park Mansions Management Company Ltd, made up of residents who own the flats within it. They are concerned to preserve and enhance as much of the character of the building as possible. Materials have been selected that do not change the existing character of the building, yet they can be read clearly as honest modern interventions. There will be a careful balance between the conservation of the listed building and the need to preserve the building for the future
As with many properties of this nature, it is important to focus repairs in the most critical areas and plan for future funding and repairs in a phased and prioritised manner. Following on from the successful completion of Phase 1 drainage and external works across the site, Phase 2 will cover repair and restoration of the roof and works to the balconies.

The Liverpool Art Prize is a competition of contemporary art open to professional artists based in or born in the Liverpool City Region of the United Kingdom.
2014 will be the 7th Liverpool Art Prize. The competition is administered and managed by Metal at Edge Hill Station.
The prize of £2000 pounds is awarded to the winning artist. The winner of the People’s choice award, decided on by the public voting at the gallery, will be awarded with £1000.
The exhibition will open on Thursday 8 May at 6pm, at Edge Hill Station.
Entrance is FREE. Open Thursday - Saturday 11.00am-5.00pm until Saturday 21 June.

The Student HUB at Edge Hill University has won The West Lancashire County Council Design Award 2013 for Best Commercial Development.
The judges felt the bespoke and innovative design by ABW Architects Ltd, successfully blended the old original fabric of the university into a newly created social space resulting in an outstanding new building for the university and the wider area.
The West Lancashire design Awards take place every 2 years and aim to acknowledge and promote the importance of good-quality planned development and building design.

Hidden Liverpool is an exciting yearlong project that will explore some of the city's empty buildings by inviting residents and visitors to share memories, stories and images of buildings that they worked in, visited and used but can no longer access.
These memories will form the starting point for considering what the future of these buildings could be, developing ideas about how we can unlock the potential of Liverpool's hidden gems.

The ‘People’s City’ exhibition is a selection of stunning images exploring peoples relationship with Liverpool’s empty buildings from a citywide photographic competition. ‘Peoples City’ is the first major event in the Hidden Liverpool Programme.
